Domain Name Registration / What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your address on the internet, e.g. www.yourdomainname.com. It is a convenient, (usually easy to remember), way of identifying a company's web site address. You can use a domain name for email address, a website address, or both.  Every domain name is unique and once you have registered your domain name it is reserved for you and cannot be used by anyone else.

Domain names are registered for a specified period of time, at the end of which you have the opportunity to renew your name and continue to own it. If you do not renew your name, it will become publicly available and could then be registered by someone else.

Hosting / What is Hosting?

Web hosting means providing a space on the internet where your website "lives". A website is made up of a number of files which make up the pages and other parts of your site that people see when they visit your site with a browser. A web host, or hosting account, stores these files on their server(s) and serves up your website to people accessing your web address.

Your email service consists of; receiving emails sent to you, storing these emails on the internet ready for you to collect, (either with an email program on your computer, or via webmail access through your browser), and the sending of your outgoing messages. These tasks are also performed using a web server, typically at the same place, and in the same "host account" where you have your website hosted.
